Stl Comics is very sad to report that yet another icon of the DC Comics Silver Age has passed away. At the age
of 78, Bob Haney died Thanksgiving day in a nursing facility in California. He had been hospitalized due
to a stroke.
Haney had started his comics career with other companies such as Fawcett and Harvey, but made his mark
in at DC in the 1950's, and again in the dawn of a new era. He was responsible for such titles as
Metamorpho, Doom Patrol,
and STL favorite the TEEN TITANS. Working for DC into the early 1980's, he wrote other titles including
Action Comics, Adventure Comics, All-American Men of War,
Aquaman, Blackhawk, Brave and the Bold, G.I. Combat, House of Secrets, Our Army At War,
Sea Devils, Sgt. Rock, Showcase, The Unknown Soldier, and World's Finest Comics. The
GCD Database shows an unbelievable 1359 different matches for comics stories
penned by Haney. He also later worked on the TV cartoons Thundercats, Silverhawks and Karate Kat.
The co-creation of the Teen Titans with artists Bruno Premiani and Nick Cardy in The Brave and the Bold #54
and Showcase #59 led to one of the most successful titles of the 1980's,
The New Teen Titans by Wolfman and Perez. There has also been a recent resurgence of
Titans-mania with the current revamp that is in place. Haney's other creation, the Doom Patrol has also
recently been revised by DC Comics to try and restore the title to its original intentions, much the
way Haney had created it.
The staff of Stl Comics would like to offer our condolences to the family and close friends of Bob Haney.
The comic industry, and DC Comics in particular would not be where they are today without his contributions.
His presence will be sorely missed.
